Mandala Painted Sewing Box
June 14, 2017
This sewing box belonged to my mum, I think she had it as a wedding present back in 1967. Growing up it was always in the corner, stuffed full of sewing bits and pieces. I remember we always used it as an extra seat at the dinner table at Christmas and other family get togethers too.
It had definitely seen better days, the legs were very scuffed and the top was quite badly scratched and watermarked. I use it as my sewing box now and it sits in the corner of our dining room which is all whites and greys so it looked a bit out of place. Time for a makeover.
Once it was all put back together it already looked much better.
I'm so happy with how this turned out. I was a bit worried that I might mess it up and wish I'd never started but no, all is well.

This is beautiful, Julie! It's perfect for storing sewing supplies and keeping all of the small items stashed together. The mandala is a fabulous touch!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathy, the trick now is to try to keep it as tidy as this!
DeleteOooh this is lovely! So professional and stylish!
ReplyDeleteThank you Caroline, I am super pleased with it, especially that I didn't mess it up!
DeleteIt turned out beautiful! I love the mandala on top.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I love mandalas, they are very soothing to draw but thankfully not too difficult if you keep it simple.
DeleteLove your beautiful design on top! I have an old sewing box that you've given me inspiration for!
ReplyDeleteThank you Roseann, It did turn out exactly as I had imagined it in my head which is always a bonus. I hope your sewing box makeover goes well if you decide to have a go.
DeleteThis is such a pretty makeover. The mandala looks so nice and really personalizes it. I love redoing these sewing boxes.
ReplyDeleteThank you Debra, it was reading furniture makeovers on blogs like yours that gave me to final nudge to actually get the paintbrushes out and do this!
DeleteYour sewing box looks GREAT! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful makeover Julie. Mandala always amaze me and you did it perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThis looks lovely! I've been keeping an eye out for a sewing box at the resale shops but it never even occurred to me to paint one. So many more options that way!
ReplyDeleteThis is so beautiful. So much better because it was your mother's. It looks new now. I am off to look at the how to do a Mandella post, like it much more than a stencil.
ReplyDeleteMy Nana had a sewing box similar to this one next to her chair in the living room. When I was little she would always pull out one project or another to work on in the evening. As she got older, it was more likely to hold her TV guide and remote control, hahaha. I love how this project turned out. Thanks for sharing it with us at Creatively Crafty #ccbg :)
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to think back on precious memories isn't it.
DeleteA box like this is also perfect for resting a cuppa on too!
Beautiful sewing supply box Julie I adore it
ReplyDeletethanks Amber, what a lovely thing to say :-)
DeleteYou have done a great job. I have just inherited my mum's sewing box, although I don't have it yet. I think I may be too scared to do anything with it, but I am looking forward to looking through the contents.
ReplyDeleteI did have this for over 4 years before I finally took the plunge and got that paint brush out. I think it's ok to have precious inherited items and keep them just as they are for as long as you want. No rush to make changes at all. (but now I've done this I am glad I did!)
DeleteWhat a cool piece of furniture! The Mandela is perfect for it. Thank you for sharing on Merry Monday! Hope to see ya next week!
ReplyDeleteKim
Thank you Kim, I'll let me kids know something I've done is cool!
DeleteBeautiful job and great tutorial! Thanks for sharing at the Pleasures of the NW's DIY party!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job on the sewing box. I love that you created the Mandala yourself. Thank you for sharing your project at the Snickerdoodle Create~Bake~Make link party!
ReplyDeleteThis is so beautiful, I love the lining of the tray. Every time I see such project I want to paint all my furniture in the house :).
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to know when to stop isn't it? There is such a lot of amazing painted furniture around these days.
DeleteNow it is so beautiful you will be tempted to move it from the dining room into the living room for all to see. Love the addition of the flower on top. Julie you have to find one of those for me. I've got so much stuff and have resorted to putting them in a suitcase because a regular sewing box will not do!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mary, I'm afraid this is not al my sewing stuff though! I have 2 plastic boxes in one of the kids wardrobes too, plus bits and pieces al over the place. I do try to be tidy!!
DeleteSuch a great makeover! I love your hand-painted mandala! Thanks for sharing at Sew It Cook It Craft It.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lina, I am pretty pleased with how it turned out.
