I received a large polystyrene bunny from Hobbycraft, part of their Easter decorating range.
She (I think it's a she, I'm not sure why) has been so much fun to decorate. I wasn't sure initially what I was going to do with her, but thinking about rabbits reminded me of a battered copy of Alice in Wonderland that I picked up in a charity shops ages ago. I had a plan to do some art work (still on my 'to do' list) but I knew that wouldn't take the whole book. I dug it out and on flicking through discovered that at the end is "An Easter greeting to every child that loves Alice".
I assume every copy has this but I don't know for sure. Still, it was like it was mean't to be!
I realise that batter copies of Alice in Wonderland might be hard to come by, if you can't find one don't worry. You can use any book, not enough really shows to matter and then just photocopy a page with an illustration from a copy of the actual book if you want to make a tag like I have.
To make your own Alice in Wonderland inspired Decoupaged Book Bunny you will need:
A polystyrene bunny - mine is this one from Hobbycraft
An old book - As I said, I had a copy of Alice in Wonderland but you could manage with any old book.
Mod Podge - mine was the sparkly kind, I love it but you can use regular if you prefer.
Ribbon
A scrap of card, scissors, brush
Start by ripping a few pages of the book into small pieces. I put the ones with the illustrations I wanted to save to one side and ripped up about 10 pages in all for this.
Brush Mod Podge over a section of the rabbit and start glueing the book scraps on.
Cover the paper completely over the top with glue too. You'll find it softens and has a little 'give' once it's all saturated with the glue but for curved sections it's also helpful to do little rips in the sides of the paper scraps too.
I did my rabbit all over save for the bottom inch and allowed it to dry throughly overnight.
In the morning I decoupaged over the last bit going round onto the base.
I thought the ears were a little bit fiddly, that was until I did the tail! For these extra curvy bits I just used much smaller pieces of paper, this made it easier.
Whilst she dried I made her a tag.
I ripped round one of the rabbit illustrations that I'd saved earlier and cut a simple tag shape from scrap card. I simple glued the illustration on and then added the happy easter greeting I ripped from the letter at the back of the book.
To finish her off I just tied a blue check ribbon from my stash round her neck and added the tag with a tiny length of embroidery thread.

I once made an Alice dress and apron for a themed Alice in Wonderland kids' party, so yes, they are a real thing. Your bunny would have been quite at home there. She's super cute. This would be a great activity for kids.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's just because I've never been to one that I wanted to check they are a thing. Since writing that I've checked on pinterest and I can see that yes, they are most definitely a thing! An Alice dress and apron sound very cute.
DeleteThis is adorable, Julia! I've seen these different "statues" at craft stores, but didn't really think about what to do with them. You have inspired me and I now I need to get one. Wouldn't one be pretty covered in flowers, too? Fabric or tissue paper flowers would be gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteOoo yes, flowers all over, or I've seen them just as a sort of 'crown' which is really pretty. I think a pretty flowery paper napkin decoupage would be great too. They are pretty versatile, you can paint them, cover them with paper or fabric, glitter them, allsorts!
DeleteThis bunny is adorable!I love the hint of glitz from the sparkle Mod Podge. Pinning and sharing all over the place!
ReplyDeletePS I recently started a link-up of my own, I'd love it if you stopped by and shared...http://www.mybusybeehives.com/2017/03/bee-party-5.html
Thanks for the invite, I'll pop over now.
DeleteI love this bunny! And I love that you used sparkly Mod Podge...because in my world everything is better with a bit of sparkly! Thanks for sharing this. I am pinning to share it!
ReplyDeleteMe too, something I think non sparkly is ok, but why not have a little pizazz of you can ! Thanks for sharing :-)
DeleteI love your decoupaged Easter bunny! Such a cute idea!
ReplyDeletethank you, glad you like it.
DeleteLooks GREAT! :-D
ReplyDeleteBTW, a "thought" just rabbit-holed through my brain... Would using some MICRO-MINI [if you can find them for cheap] Playing Cards work? You still might have to snip them around those curvy bits... And perhaps use the FACE CARDS around the torso like a "jacket"..?
Whatever. If you ever get around to doing one like that, let me know how it turns out. -- I'd give it a shot myself, but I have NO "room" around here to do it. And, even if I could, it'd likely end up being covered in DUST-BUNNIES first!!
;-}

Lol, dust bunnies, I like that!
DeleteDo you mean those tiny packs of cards that come in Christmas Crackers (that may just be a very English thing ) or that the kids get in party bags, the thin tiny ones? I think that could be great, a jacket could be very cool. Or maybe the tag could be a playing card..... so many different possibilities !
I love him and AiW as well perfect
ReplyDeleteThanks Caroline.
Deleteyeah, whatever size "works"... And/or use them to cover a top-hat for the rabbit, in keeping with the ALICE Theme...
ReplyDelete>:-)=
You have so many ideas!
DeleteI did think about a top hat, but that was more the mad hatter wasn't it? I don't suppose it really matters, the whole book is pretty crazy anyway!
Oh my goodness-it's a work of art! I use a small foam brush to apply the glue and find it much easier then use the brush where needed eg the ears. May just have to visit Hobbycraft later today. Catriona
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip, I'll have to look out for little foam brushes.
DeleteSo cute and love that you used an Easter book. Great project! Visiting from Sweet Inspiration party.
ReplyDeleteFinding the Easter letter at the back of the book was a total surprise, I had no idea! But it worked out well :-)
DeleteOh wow, this is so cute. I love using old books for crafts. :) I'm a big reader in general though so anything bookish is great. That's awesome you were able to use an old copy of Alice. I LOVE the glitter mod podge; I'd never used that before but I need to get some.

Stopping by from the SitsGirls link up!
Thanks Lauren, the glitter in the mod podge is brilliant, worth looking out for.
DeleteI must confess I didn't realize there was a glitter version of Modge Podge. Actual glitter has been banned from the SuzerSpace (for usual reasons - crevices in hardwood floors hold a LOT of glitter), but maybe this would be allowable.
ReplyDeleteGlitter really does get in all the places doesn't it?! I found the sparkle in the mod podge just right & worth a try for a less messy option.
DeleteI adore this bunny and Alice in wonderland is prefect to use to cover it - gorgeous Julie
ReplyDeleteThanks Amber, it's fun isn't it. Glad you like her.
DeleteThis bunny craft is so adorable, and now that I know sparkly Modge Podge exists, I am going to have to get some. Pinned! Thank you for linking up at the #HomeMattersParty this week.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nicole, it's great stuff, i know I'm going to be using it to sparkle all the things from now on!
DeleteI love bunny decor for Spring but this year I am even wilder about it than usual. They are just so adorable. I like this version with the recycled paper, but the vintage paper bunny tag is what makes its special. Love that little bit extra.
ReplyDeleteThank you Leanna, the tag is cute isn't it? and so simple to make too. I feel I did get lucky with the words I found in the book though!
DeleteThis is the cutest project, I first thought because of the tag, it was something you had bought finished, its darling and being featured on Friday Featured this week! Hope to see you there.
ReplyDeleteThanks you so much. I'll pop by to say a proper thank you!
DeleteAww this is so sweet Julie, my daughter loves bunnies and she would love this :) Thanks for sharing at Creative Mondays last week, you will be one of my features this week :):)
ReplyDeleteHe's such a cute bunny. Love the idea of using the pages of an Easter greeting, and the tag is awesome. Thank you for joining The Really Crafty Link Party this week. Pinned!
ReplyDeleteI love a DIY that even I could try. This is so cute, I would buy it at the store and pop it on a shelf for that special touch. The card you made before reading I thought was a stamp. How creative you are to use an image on the tag...love it! Thank you for joining us and sharing this at TADA! Thursdays
ReplyDeleteYour decoupage bunny is adorable! I love using old books for crafts. Thanks for sharing at Snickerdoodle. Pinning to my Easter Board.
