I had a few false starts with this project, it was too wide, then to floppity, I had to frog it and start again more than once. This version gives a good balance between what you need a tie to do (ie not to wide at the knot, good length, you can get in on and off again without having to tie it each time!) whilst still looking basically like the Doctor's scarf.
I know some people crochet Doctor Who scarves too, which is probably way quicker, but for me it has to be authentic garter stitch.
Basically you need 7 colours of DK wool: purple, camel, bronze, mustard, rust, grey and greenish brown. This is according to the original BBC pattern which I've pinned and you can find here.
This is what I chose, after studying old pictures.
Most I had already in my wool stash, so I can't tell you quantities for each. To be honest I followed the original pattern in terms of the stripe widths etc but if you ran out of something part way through and substituted I'm pretty sure you'd never be able to tell.
Here's the pattern: Printable PDF Version here
Using 3mm needles, cast on 12 stitches in purple.
Using knit throughout work the stripes like this:
work 3 purple rows
26 camel
8 bronze
6 mustard
10 rust
4 purple
10 green
4 mustard
8 camel
6 rust

ReplyDeleteThat is so so cool. In fact I think it is the coolest tie I have seen. I am going to show my son, and see if he might want one. He is not big on ties, but maybe this could win him over.
ReplyDeleteMy lad only wears a tie for school (otherwise his standard uniform is jeans, funny T-shirt and a hoodie) however you never know when you will be going somewhere where a tie is required... a wedding, tea with the Queen, the Ritz...
DeleteWow! How fantastic! amazing tie - great idea! So cool!
ReplyDeleteWould you like a jelly baby? (Sorry, showing my age there..big fan of the 4th Doctor, and the 3rd, and the 9th and....)
Ali
Ah yes, the 4th was my Doctor too (from when I was little) I loved that he came back for the Day of the Doctor, just for that little scene at the end, perfect! However I have very much enjoyed all the recent incarnations too.
DeleteIt was an epic episode, and that scene made my day!
DeleteThanks for your comments Julia - left you a message on the blue box post!!
Ali
I LOVE the Doctor's tie! It's so much fun! Love me some Dr Who! :D
ReplyDeleteYour scarf/tie is wonderful and what a brilliant tutorial. My son is a big Dr Who fan so I might have a go at making one. Your son looks very pleased with it. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAli xx
Awesome tie! You did a great job, and your son looks wonderful with it on. :) I found you through Craftomaniac's Sunday Soirée and would like to invite you (and your followers) to join my link-a-long each Friday and weekend at www.GoCrochetCrazy.blogspot.com . All things homemade and handmade welcome!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary, I'll pop by on Friday.
DeleteThank you for sharing this in the link-a-long on the Go Crochet Crazy blog!
DeleteThis is great! Love all the colors. My twin sons watch that show and really like it. I will have to show them this...
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous tie, I think it's great idea too.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a lot quicker than a scarf anyway!
DeleteThis is great! I love your photos.
ReplyDeleteI love Doctor Who! I was very excited to see this post. I have yet to try knitting but I do crochet. I think I may have to give this a whirl and give it to my dad (who is also a whovian).
ReplyDeleteHi Georgia, you could try a crochet version, I have seen lovely scarves that other people have made. It's just me being all pedantic that wanted it to be more like the scarf I remember, in knitting.
DeleteOn the other hand, it's all knit so a great beginners project (just sew in the ends as you go, if you leave them all to the end you might loose the will to finish it!)
Oh my goodness! Are you kidding me? You are a girl after my own heart. I love Dr. Who! You are so inventive and creative! Love, love, love this post!
ReplyDeleteLove and Luck,

I read somewhere that there are 2 kinds of people, those who love Doctor Who and those who haven't seen it yet! I'm always surprised when I meet people who actually don't like it!
DeleteOMG OMG OMG OMG!!!! THIS IS A NEED IN MY LIFE!
ReplyDeleteSomeone who is nearly as excited as me! I have a similar bracelet idea coming soon which you might like. I've just got to take some half decent photos of it.
DeleteMy room mates are big doctor who fans, and I'm one of those who haven't seen it yet. (Its on my list there;s just so much of it!) I still love this tutorial and will book mark it for the day I learn to knit though!
ReplyDeleteYou need a whole weekend and a box set, plenty of snacks and tea, probably a box of tissues (oh and the ability to suspend everything you ever learnt about physics) and you will be all set for a Doctor Who fest! I recommend watching them over and over as well as they get better the more times you see them, it can be a lot to take in first time round!
DeleteI loved seeing this on Create It Thursday. I'm so happy to see the pinned link for the scarf as well, my husband has been begging me for one :)
ReplyDeleteGood Luck Shauna, I hope you love knitting! (It would be amazing to actually make one though)
DeleteHi I think this knitted tie is really cool and colorful too! You did a great job knitting this! I saw it at the go crochet party!
ReplyDeleteI love this tie!!! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteFantastic scarf! Your son looks very happy with his new wardrobe addition!

THAT is an awesome tie. But I have to admit, when I read the title I thought it was "the doctor, who knitted a tie" instead of the "doctor who" knitted tie. haha!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a great post: "Once upon a time there was a doctor who knitted a tie...."! Calling all knitting doctors out there - have you made any ties recently?
DeleteThanks for stopping by, you've started my day with a laugh!
Oh I love this!
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a Dr. Who fan too!! I think I've seen a few episodes on PBS *waaay* back!
ReplyDeleteYour tie is fun and funky and no doubt your son had the best time wearing.
Thanks so much for sharing your tutorial with us a Project Inspire{d}!

DeleteI've recently become a Dr. Who fan - I like it a lot more than I thought I would have. This tie is adorable. Thanks for popping by my site during the SITSSharefest.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure Adrian, I love visiting new blogs from the SITS network.
DeleteI have many friends who are Doctor Who fans. I try not to get too addicted to new shows because I tend to watch even when they've jumped the shark! This tie is awesome! Great job! Thanks for sharing iwth Countdown in Style!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Your tie is fabulous!
